Stay Hydrated – Drink Water

Staying hydrated sounds simple right? Just drink water. Yet for many people working from home, it’s one of the easiest healthy habits to overlook.

During the workday, hours can pass without standing up, let alone reaching for a glass of water. Keeping a water bottle within arm’s reach has become one of my most practical reminders to drink enough throughout the day.

Hydration matters at every stage of life, but it becomes especially important as we age and as hybrid work quietly reduces our daily movement.

Why Drinking Enough Water Matters

Some of us consume very little water while relying heavily on coffee, soda, or other sweetened beverages. While those drinks count toward fluid intake, they don’t replace the benefits of plain water.

Water supports nearly every system in the body. Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, difficulty concentrating, and reduced physical performance, symptoms that are easy to mistake for stress or aging.

How Much Water Do You Really Need?

There has long been debate about how much water a person should drink each day.

One commonly shared guideline is to drink roughly half your body weight in ounces of water per day. For example, a person who weighs 150 pounds would aim for about 75 ounces of water daily. While this rule can be a helpful starting point, it isn’t a medical standard.

According to the Mayo Clinic, daily fluid needs vary based on age, activity level, health, and environment. As a general guideline:

  • Men need about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of total fluids per day
  • Women need about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of total fluids per day

Importantly, about 20% of daily fluid intake typically comes from food, with the rest coming from beverages, especially water.

Here is what we should remember, hydration isn’t one-size-fits-all. Listening to your body, monitoring thirst, and checking urine color (pale yellow is a good sign) are practical ways to stay on track.

Health Benefits of Drinking Water

Water is the best everyday beverage for good reason. Proper hydration can:

  • Support energy levels and reduce fatigue
  • Aid digestion and maintain regularity
  • Help regulate body temperature
  • Support kidney and liver function
  • Assist with nutrient and oxygen transport in the body
  • Help maintain healthy blood pressure
  • Support skin health
  • Flush waste products from the body

When you’re well hydrated, your organs don’t have to work as hard to keep everything functioning properly.

Hydration Tips for Hybrid Boomers Working From Home

As a Hybrid Boomer who works primarily from home, I’ve learned that hydration requires intention.

Here’s what helps me stay consistent:

  • Use one large container so you can visually track how much you’ve had
  • Refill it at night and grab it first thing in the morning
  • Start sipping by 7 or 8 a.m.
  • Drink water with meals and snacks
  • Take a few sips during breaks or after moving around
  • Drink water after walks or light exercise
  • Bring your water with you when running errands

By the end of the evening, the container is usually empty, and I know I’ve stayed hydrated without having to count every sip.

A Simple Habit With Big Impact

Hydration isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency.

For Hybrid Boomers, staying hydrated supports energy, focus, digestion, and overall well-being especially in a work-from-home routine where natural movement is limited.

Water doesn’t need to be complicated or trendy.
It just needs to be part of the day.

Sometimes the most effective health habits are also the simplest: stay hydrated—drink water.
